At the Digital Summit 2019 in Dortmund on October 29, the BMWi and BMBF jointly presented the “GAIA-X project”, which aims to create the next generation of a secure, innovative data infrastructure. The project was developed on the basis of European values and is to be tackled with European partners.
The aim is to network decentralized infrastructure services into a homogeneous, user-friendly system. This structure is intended to strengthen both the digital sovereignty of cloud service consumers and the scalability and competitive position of European cloud providers.
“GAIA-X” is therefore intended to serve as the basis for an open digital ecosystem in which data can be securely made available, merged and shared and which will enable companies to scale competitively from Europe on a global scale. However, participation in the project is also open to market participants outside Europe who share the European goals of data sovereignty and data availability.
