Intelligent energy networks

The digitalization of the critical energy supply infrastructure is key to the success of the energy transition. Against this backdrop, the expert group on intelligent energy grids is of particular importance. New, innovative solutions must be found, discussed and recommended in order to keep the increasing complexity of the overall system stable and safely manageable and at the usual high level.

Goals/prioritized focus topics

The aim of the expert group in 2021 is to develop the following priorities and increase cross-domain cooperation within the Intelligent Networking Working Group.

The 2021 work program of the Smart Energy Grids expert group includes the following priorities:

  1. Lessons learned and recommendations for action in crisis situations
The current pandemic situation poses an unprecedented challenge for operators of critical infrastructure. The aim is to continue to guarantee the high reliability, security of supply and quality of services of general interest. All of this under conditions that make traditional operations significantly more difficult. Against this backdrop, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on how operations can be ensured even in crisis situations and the growing importance of digitalization in this context. It is important to compile and evaluate these findings from the perspective of smart energy grids and to derive recommendations for action from them. The expert group believes that there is a great opportunity for the digitalization of critical infrastructures in particular.
  2. Support for overarching activities and projects of the focus group
In 2021, the expert group will continue to participate in the overarching projects on the annual topic of “Services of general interest and sustainability through intelligent networking” of the Intelligent Networking Focus Group. This includes contributing to the 2021 policy document and actively shaping the DIV conference.
  3. Support for GAIA-X activities
The expert group supports the activities of the GAIA-X project. To this end, the energy group addresses the topic of cross-domain coupling and defines the requirements of smart energy grids for other domains such as smart cities & regions and smart living.

Target image for intelligent energy grids 2020

By 2020, the social challenges posed by the transformation of the energy supply will have been overcome. Citizens see themselves as an independent part of the energy network and are involved in relevant decisions. Key target components are:

In 2020, the framework conditions for market roles and communication platforms have been adapted and function as the basis for the restructured energy system. The handling of the new data arising in many areas as well as responsibilities and competencies is regulated in the form of laws, ordinances and regulations. The legal framework has created investment security for the market roles. Key target components are

In 2020, a new market architecture has led to the entry of new players, more intensive exchange relationships and innovative business models for grid and end customer-oriented services. Key challenges of the restructured energy system, e.g. grid stability, are solved efficiently and reliably via market mechanisms. Key target components are:

New business models and roles require corresponding processes and solutions. The majority of new market activities take place at local and regional level in the distribution grid. The information required for this will be made available to the individual market roles in a non-discriminatory manner in 2020. Key target components are:

The increase in decentralized energy generation and market activities is leading to a considerably more complex energy supply. In 2020, ICT will enable the smooth exchange of data and the interaction of a wide variety of players while ensuring security of supply. Key target components are:
