Smart Cities / Smart Regions

Digitization happens on site. Cities and regional conurbations are the main drivers of smart connectivity in Germany. The expert group has set itself the goal of highlighting the prospects and opportunities of digitalization for cities and regions, identifying obstacles and providing impetus for the accelerated implementation of smart cities and smart regions.

The focus here is on citizens, because technology is only “smart” if it succeeds in understanding people as independent actors at the center of a digitally supported community.

The expert group brings together relevant stakeholders and pools expertise for decision-makers at federal, state and local level as well as in the private sector. It also aims to strengthen networking with regions, cities and municipalities.

The 2021 work program of the Smart Cities and Smart Regions expert group comprises the following four priorities

  1. Leading collaboration on the organization of the DIV Conference 2021
  2. Creation of a white paper on the annual topic of FG2 “Services of general interest and future viability of smart cities / smart regions through intelligent networking” (working title)
  3. Monitoring GAIA-X activities: The expert group supports the activities of the national GAIA-X Hub and the national and European activities currently taking place in the GAIA-X environment. To this end, it addresses the topic of cross-domain coupling and defines the requirements of smart cities/smart regions for other domains.
  4. Further work on the “2030 target vision” for smart cities and smart regions

The preliminary 2021 work program of the Smart Administrative Networks expert group includes the following priorities

The focus is on:
  • The model perspective for the development and expansion of smart cities and smart regions
  • The presentation of the benefits for each individual, the innovation potential for the economy, administration and society (inclusion, quality of life and participation) as well as the importance of resilience and sustainability and the establishment of open, secure, data protection-compliant and connectable data platforms (consolidation and use of data and data governance).
