Winners of the AI innovation competition announced

On September 19, the winners of the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Competition were presented with their awards at the opening of the new Digital Technologies Forum. From an initial 130 concept ideas from areas such as mobility, healthcare, industry, smart living, agriculture, retail and construction, the 35 best participants were given the opportunity to draw up detailed roadmaps for implementing their concept ideas and forming powerful consortia. The 16 winners were then selected from these roadmaps to realize their concepts in the subsequent implementation phase. The winners come from the application fields of retail, health, smart living, agriculture, quantum computing, production and process engineering, health and mobility.

Retail application area:

Knowledge4Retail: Artificial intelligence for retail
The aim is to make retail smarter. To this end, the project aims to create new opportunities to better connect online and brick-and-mortar retail. The specific range of products available in stores is to be made accessible on the internet using digital twins. Intelligent service robots are to be used to automatically record the available goods.

Speaker: Building a leading voice assistance platform “Made in Germany
Voice assistants are becoming increasingly important for human-machine interaction. The aim of the project is to create a voice assistance platform “Made in Germany” for specialized applications in industry and in the B2B sector, for which there are no convincing solutions yet.

Health application area:

EMPAIA: Ecosystem for Pathology Diagnostics with AI Assistance
Ecosystem for AI-supported, image-based diagnostics in pathology. By creating a standardized marketplace under a clear legal framework, doctors should be able to routinely use approved and validated AI solutions, for example to detect metastases or determine tumor-filtering lymphocytes.

KIKS: Artificial intelligence for clinical trials
KIKS aims to establish a cloud-based platform for the medical device industry for clinical data collection and analysis. As the first platform of its kind and with the help of integrated AI methods, the aim is to automate time-consuming processes in clinical trials. The interests of patients, medical device manufacturers and payers are to be taken into account equally.

KI-Sigs: AI space for intelligent healthcare systems
KI-Sigs aims to establish an intelligent healthcare system in which large volumes of medical, clinical, behavioral and social health and care data are brought together. The aim is to gain a holistic view of the patient and enable AI-based multimodal diagnostics.

Smart Living field of application:

ForeSight: Platform for context-sensitive, intelligent and predictive smart living services
ForeSight aims to establish an AI-based platform for the development of innovative smart living services in the home environment, in particular based on AI-based technologies. The aim is to create a new, connecting ecosystem for manufacturers, providers and users from different sectors, which will also help to overcome current interoperability problems when using components from different manufacturers

Field of application Agriculture:

REIF: Resource-efficient, Economic and Intelligent Foodchain
The time is ripe to revolutionize the food industry in Germany and ensure a waste-free supply. Artificial intelligence is to be used to optimize planning and control processes in the food industry. The ecosystem designed is intended to integrate stakeholders at all stages of the value chain.

Field of application quantum computing:

PlanQK: Platform and ecosystem for quantum-assisted artificial intelligence
PlanQK aims to create a platform for quantum-assisted artificial intelligence and the development of a corresponding community. The project is intended to help provide companies with easy access to expertise, algorithms and implementations for the use of quantum computing at an early stage. This will open up great technological innovation potential, particularly for SMEs that lack the investment power and expertise to use QC.

Application field production and process engineering:

IIP-Ecosphere: Next Level Ecosphere for Intelligent Industrial Production
The aim of IIP-Ecosphere is to use AI technologies to pave the way for the intelligent production of tomorrow. The vision of IIP-Ecosphere is an innovative leap in the field of self-optimization of production based on networked, intelligent, autonomous systems to increase productivity, flexibility, robustness and efficiency.

AI marketplace: The ecosystem for artificial intelligence in product development
In the AI marketplace, the partners are designing a digital platform to bring together providers of AI applications and manufacturing companies. The focus is on AI applications that can support product planning and the design of services and production systems.

Service-Meister: An AI-based service ecosystem for technical service in the age of Industry 4.0
Due to the increasing shortage of skilled workers, SMEs are facing the challenge of maintaining their competitive edge in the provision of technical services. Service-Meister wants to establish an AI-based platform that enables even less specialized employees to master demanding tasks in the field of maintenance and repair of complex machines with the help of digital advisors.

FabOS: Open, distributed, real-time capable and secure operating system for production
FabOS aims to create a specialized, open and secure operating system for the versatile, highly flexible factory of the future. The integration of AI-based services for autonomous production will form an important basis for this.

KEEN: AI incubator labs in the process industry
KEEN networks users, manufacturers and research institutions in order to introduce AI into the process industry much more quickly. To this end, incubator laboratories are to be set up that offer “Artificial Intelligence to understand”. These are intended to provide intelligent support in the development of processes, the construction of technical systems and the control and monitoring of ongoing processes.

SPAICER: AI-based resilience management
SPAICER wants to establish a new model for AI-based resilience management in production. SPAICER wants to respond to the increased requirements of the changeable factory in the sense of Industry 4.0, for example with regard to the resilience of systems to disruptions.

Mobility field of application:

BML-EcosSys: BauhausMobilityLab
The aim of the “Bauhaus.MobilityLab Erfurt” is to develop an open, service-oriented ecosystem to better link the energy, transport, mobility, environment and logistics sectors. The core of BML-EcoSys is a powerful laboratory platform on which providers and users of new (mobile) services can interact from the outset and jointly develop and test innovative solutions using AI applications.

Construction application area:

SDaC: Smart Design and Construction
SDaC aims to offer a platform for AI applications in planning and production processes in the construction industry and thus support the digital transformation in the construction industry. The aim is to make construction more transparent, more forward-looking and better incorporate the knowledge of all project participants.
